Learning Objectives:
Session 2 focuses on education and training methods and techniques integrated with applied research in VET, which can enhance VET curricula. Participants will explore three transformative approaches: Competency-Based Learning (CBL), Work-Based Learning (WBL), and the Data-Driven Instruction. The session emphasises how these methodologies, grounded in applied research, contribute to significant improvements in VET curricula by addressing the evolving demands of the workforce and enhancing learner outcomes through curriculum development.
Begin the session by reading the journal article titled “Enactment of the VET Curricula in the Work Process”. This article explores the concept of “enactment” within VET curricula, focusing on how the design and transfer of curriculum content support learners in applying knowledge and skills in real-world work processes. It emphasizes empowering learners to act independently and responsibly in addressing workplace demands. The article specifically highlights two key approaches: Competency-Based Learning (CBL) and Work-Based Learning (WBL) and discusses the current methodological approaches to implementing these strategies in practice.

Activity
Before examining the final approach, data-driven approach, take a moment to respond to two open-ended questions related to Work-Based Learning (WBL) and Competency-Based Learning (CBL). Your task is to analyse how these approaches contribute to aligning educational outcomes with labour market needs and improving VET curricula.
Data-Driven approach and Vocational Education: how they are interconnected? This research article explores the application of data-driven decision-making methods in enhancing literacy within vocational education. The study focuses on three key aspects – data collection, data analysis, and decision-making – to empirically investigate how these methods can optimize comprehensive literacy education in vocational colleges.
You are now invited to read the following blog post, “How Can You Ensure a Data-Driven Approach to Curriculum Development Models?” This post highlights the significance of a data-driven approach in curriculum development, which allows you to make informed decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. It also explains how to collect, utilize, and effectively communicate data for curriculum development.
Activity
After exploring data-driven curriculum development – a systematic, evidence-based process for designing, delivering, and reviewing curricula based on collected data – you are invited to participate in the following simulation activity, where you will solve curriculum-related problems by identifying and analyzing relevant data.
